Neurons that fire together, wire together. - Donald Hebb
Hello Friends,
We are having a little mid-spring summer here in the Bay Area this week. I’m not going to lie—I don’t mind it… although I did get a bit overheated in my car (these are the things that happen when it’s hot—you feel hot).
And it got me thinking… about our nervous systems. (As I do every week—it is, after all, my job.)
Lately I’ve been thinking about adaptability—our ability to change and respond to what’s in front of us, especially when things shift unexpectedly… like 85 degrees in March.
The ability to adapt quickly isn’t fixed—it’s something you build through what you consistently expose yourself to.
One of the most fascinating parts of being human is this capacity to adapt.
This is what we call neuroplasticity—your brain and nervous system’s ability to reorganize, learn, and change based on what you repeatedly experience.
In other words:
what you practice, you become.
What you practice, you wire.
The environments you choose.
The work you engage in.
The relationships you stay in.
The food you eat.
The patterns you repeat.
All of it is shaping your nervous system—and ultimately, shaping your life.
So here’s the truth:
If you keep doing the same things, in the same environments, with the same inputs…
nothing changes.
If you always keep things comfortable—physically, emotionally, energetically—your system never has a reason to adapt.
And while comfort feels good…
it does not create change.
Change requires exposure to something different.
It requires you to feel something new.
It requires you to step into a level of discomfort—again and again—until your system learns that it’s safe, and then becomes capable.
That is neuroplasticity in action.
So the question becomes:
Where are you staying the same… but expecting something different?
And more importantly—
what are you actually willing to change?
And maybe an even better place to start—
What excites you? What are you choosing to get excited about?
What feels interesting, energizing, or just slightly outside of your norm in a way that pulls you forward?
Start there.
Because change doesn’t have to feel like a burden.
It can begin with curiosity. With desire. With something that feels like a small yes.
Because awareness alone doesn’t create transformation.
Action does. Repetition does. Environment does.
It is spring.
This is the season to plant something new—intentionally.
Not just in thought… but in practice.
I’d love to hear what you’re choosing to get excited about.
And if you’re ready to step into a new environment that supports that—
join us for the Spring Retreat, May 1–3.
A few spots remain, and it’s a powerful opportunity to interrupt your patterns, immerse yourself in movement, and create real change in your body and nervous system.
You can learn more and sign up here.
With love and movement,
Lila
